Speaker 2: Welcome back to Scripture for your inner outcasts. It's April 30th, 2026, Thursday of the fourth week of Easter. Today we are joined by clinical psychologist Doctor Peter Malinowski, the co-founder and President of Souls and Hearts, and host of our sister podcast, Interior Integration for Catholics.

Speaker 1: Hello, listeners to Scripture for your inner outcasts, doctor Peter, here it is April 30th. I'm focusing in on our gospel for today on John 13, specifically verses 16, 17, and 20. Let's read those. When Jesus had washed the disciples feet, he said to them. Amen, Amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master, nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it. Amen, Amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me. And whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. So first of all, just to kind of put this into perspective, it was astonishing to Saint Peter that Jesus wanted to wash his feet. In fact, he protested against it. We see that in the Gospels. It just seemed to Peter that that wasn't the right order of things. He felt like he wasn't worthy of that. And then when he did accept it, he wanted to be washed all over. You know, Peter is like that. Very impulsive. I love him, he's my patron saint. I want to read a little bit from Erasmo Markakis book, Love Sacred Order, The Four Loves Revisited. And this may be a little heady, especially for you exiles might be more suited to some.

Speaker 1: Some of the spiritual manager parts, but it says each superior order of being, say, the angels, has the God assigned and joyfully embraced task of communicating in the fashion of an abundant cascade. The life and the love it receives from above to all beings located beneath itself. What we have here is the reaching out, the embrace and charity that binds the stronger and the weaker members of the great cosmic community to one another, constituting a magnificent chorus of praise. Here we have God the Father, sending Jesus, Jesus sending the apostles and the apostles connecting with those who are receptive to the Word of God, connecting them to Jesus, connecting them to God the Father. Erasmo Leyva Markakis goes on to say, the one masterful insight that Denny's reaches is this vision of the eternal and uncreated love of God flowing outward from the Godhead with divine energy into the whole created order in such a way that each creature, according to its nature, both receives God's vivifying love unto itself, and as concrete thanksgiving communicates such love further to its fellow creatures. Okay. What what am I trying to get at here? I'm basically arguing that it's the role of each part of us to receive love and to pass that love on.

Speaker 1: And so often when a former exile is in right relationship with the innermost self within a person, it's that former exile that can actually reach out in a way that no other part of the person can, and connect with the suffering exile in another person. In other words, this isn't just the innermost self doing all the loving. No, the exiles are absolutely essential to loving wholeheartedly, and that's ordered. These former exiles have a way of resonating with exiles and other people because they've been there, they've done that. They know what it's like. You exiles know what it's like. So I really advocate this for for makers, especially therapists, coaches, spiritual directors, priests, all those who accompany others in human formation or in spiritual formation or in pastoral or intellectual formation, to really do your own work, really connect with your own exiles. If you would really want to connect with the exiles of another person, it is so important that you be connected with your own exiles. It's so important for that loving because you don't love just with your innermost self. And we know this our our God wants us to love with our whole heart. That's all of our parts. And so I just want to leave you with that.
