374 The Ache to Be Fully Known is the Desire for Heaven

Speaker 1: Love is patient. Love is kind. It is not jealous. Love is not pompous. It is not inflated. It is not rude. It does not seek its own interests. It is not quick tempered. It does not brood over injury. It does not rejoice over wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. You are listening to Scripture for your inner outcasts. Today is Wednesday, September 16th, 2026. The memorial of Saints Cornelius and Cyprian. I'm Elizabeth, and I'm the producer of this show and I'll be with you today. Our first reading today is the classic wedding reading of Love is Patient. Love is kind. This comes from First Corinthians, where Saint Paul writes, love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous. Love is not pompous. It is not inflated. It is not rude. It does not seek its own interests. It is not quick tempered. It does not brood over injury. It does not rejoice over wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. And then, furthermore, in the first reading, Saint Paul also says, when I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child. When I became a man, I put aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly as in a mirror, but then face to face.
Speaker 1: At present I know partially. Then I shall know fully as I am fully known. So I have two points I'd like to offer for today's episode. The first is that when Saint Paul says love is patient, love is kind. This, I have found, has become my very useful barometer for telling how in self I am in a given moment. In the internal family systems modality of psychology, we say that there are eight C's which are the characteristics of the self, and you are self led to the extent that you are having a felt sense of the eight C's. But for me personally, remembering the eight C's and Thinking about them and doing an eight seas litmus test in any given moment is too much. So I tend to just think, am I patient, am I kind? And that will tell me if I'm feeling charitable, if I am feeling loving because of what Saint Paul says. It's much easier for me to detect patience and kindness in myself than it is to detect the eight C's. So I just offer that as a suggestion in case that's helpful to anyone listening who is currently doing parts. Work with yourself. And then the second point I'd like to mention is how interesting and how jarring I find it that Saint Paul says when he was a child, he used to talk as a child.
Speaker 1: But then when he became a man, he put aside childish things. For you inner outcasts who are listening or your exiled parts, you are probably actually still the age of a kid. You are probably super young when you got cast out of your internal system, and thus you still talk and think and reason as a child. There might be other parts in your system who talk and think and reason as an adult, but you're not capable of that. And that's okay. You can't be expected to do something that you're not capable of. If you're able to reach out to your manager parts or to your innermost self and express a desire for relationship, then they can help to bring you up to speed to the age that you are. And then, as Saint Paul says, at present I am known partially. At present you exiled parts are known very, very partially. But then Saint Paul says, I shall know fully as I am fully known. Isn't that what you want? Don't you want to be fully known? Don't you want to be fully known and heard and seen and understood? That's what you want.
Speaker 1: Now, Saint Paul, in this reading, I believe he's saying that in heaven he will be fully known. And that's true. And we will none of us, none of our parts, none of our beings, will ever be fully known by another human on earth. Well, except for Jesus and Mary. But once we get to heaven, that's when we will feel the fullness of knowledge, the fullness of being known. So you exiled parts through increased relationship with the other parts in your system, and especially your innermost self, who can act out of patience and love. You can be known to a large extent, but you won't be fully known until heaven. And that's okay. The ache that you feel, that's the ache towards heaven. It can be partially satisfied, but it will never be fully satisfied here on earth. Thanks for tuning in today.
